DUNMORE - All good things must come to an end and Saturday was the end of a great season for the Elk Lake boys basketball team. They couldn't hang with the run and gun offense of Holy Cross, as the standard-bearer for local boys basketball defeated the Warriors 80-49.
Elk Lake head coach John Warnero and his team have a lot to be proud of despite the semifinal loss in the AAA boys playoffs.
The Warriors won an impressive 20 games this season and captured the Lackawanna League Division III crown. Going 13-1 in league play with their only loss to AA district finalist Lackawanna Trail.
The Crusaders poured it on early, pumping in 44 points in the first half, while limiting the Warriors to just 17 points in the first 16 minutes.
At the halftime intermission the Elk Lake Warriors trailed by 27 points.
The Warriors hung with Holy Cross in the second half, the Crusaders outscored them 22-15 in the third to put the mercy rule into effect.
Elk Lake would win the fourth quarter scoring battle 17-14, but the Crusaders still cruised to the 80-49 victory over the Warriors.
Pond paced the Warriors offense with a team high 18 points, tallying all his points from behind the arc.
Senior Logan Ayotte made a trio of three pointer, notching 11 points in all. Fellow senior Noah Gesford contributed with eight points.
John Heitsman also finished with eight points, and sixth man Kendel Jones chipped in with four points.
Elk Lake finished the season with a 20-4 overall record, including winning 19 of their final 20 regular season games after an 0-2 start to the season.
