Three area girls teams will compete for a spot in the district finals at the arena and a ticket to the PIAA state tournament. The two AA games will take place in SusCo, with Elk Lake and Mountain View each set to host. Montrose will head to Dunmore in the AAA bracket.
The road to Hershey begins for local wrestlers as the PIAA District II Wrestling Championships are slates to start at 4:30 this afternoon at Wilkes-Barre Arrea High School. The top three place winners from each weight class will move onto regionals next weekend in Williamsport.
GIRLS BASKETBALL AA SEMIFINALS
6:30-(#4)Holy Cross(11-12) @ (#1)Elk Lake(21-2)- The Lady Warriors completely dominated their quarterfinal game over Forest City. Leah Traver notched her 1,000th career point in the process, which likely takes some pressure off. Holy Cross edged Old Forge 48-42 in the quarterfinal matchup. The two teams have four common opponents, Blue Ridge, Lackawanna Trail, Montrose and Riverside. Elk Lake was unbeaten versus those opponents, downing Riverside 55-41 on Dec. 11. Holy Cross split with Riverside, first losing 45-43 on Dec. 20. On Jan. 23 they defeated Riverside 46-41.
6:00-(#3)Wyoming Seminary(14-8) @ (#2)Mountain View(19-4)- The Lady Eagles used a big second half to dispose of the Lady Lions 49-18 in the quarterfinal round. While Seminary handled Blue Ridge, pulling away in the second half for the 58-23 victory. Their common opponents are Blue Ridge, Susquehanna, Greater Nanticoke Area and Berwick. The Lady Eagles defeated GNA 37-34 way back on Nov. 30. They dispatched of Berwick 57-31 on Dec. 28. Seminary dropped both games to GNA, losing 51-48 on Dec. 20 and 43-33 on Jan. 20. On Feb. 1 they lost a tight 43-40 decision to Berwick.
GIRLS BASKETBALL AAA SEMIFINALS
7:00-(#5)Montrose(12-11) @ (#1)Dunmore(20-2)- The Lady Meteors picked up a huge win for their program in their quarterfinal game on the road, defeating Riverside 47-40. Dunmore was the beneficiary of a first round bye. They have common opponents in Holy Cross, Riverside, Honesdale and Old Forge. Montrose lost to all four of those teams in the regular season, but all four losses were during there 0-5 start to the season. Lady Meteors head coach Dallas Ely has a solid group of young talent that is gaining valuable experience for the future.
4:30-DISTRICT WRESTLING- The preliminary rounds begin today at Wilkes-Barre Area High School, action will resume tomorrow morning at 10:00. Blue Ridge boasts two number one seeds, Aidan Tanzini and Brice Woodruff come in as the top seeds at 107 and 121 respectively. A total of 27 wrestlers from the SusCo coverage area will compete on the mats this weekend. With nine from Blue Ridge, eight from Montrose, seven from Elk Lake and three from Mountain View.
