BASEBALL: LOGAN AYOTTE SCORES GAME WINNER IN THE NINTH AS ELK LAKE EDGES CARBONDALE 2-1 (2025-05-07)

CARBONDALE - Seven innings wasn't enough to decide the game between Elk Lake and Carbondale Wednesday evening as the Warriors pulled out the 2-1 victory with Logan Ayotte scoring the winning run in the ninth.
Dawson Sherman continued to display his dominance on the mound. The senior hurler threw 100 pitches, striking out 10 in seven and a third innings. He gave up just one run on five hits and a walk.
In tight games it often comes down to the little things that mean the difference between a win and a loss.
For Elk Lake coach Tony Rezykowski it was his catcher that made the difference, "Alden Felker was a stud behind the plate tonight and has been all year. Best catcher in the area hands down, he kept Carbondale from moving anywhere on the bases and he had some huge third strike blocked balls in the dirt, one in particular to end the game."
Coach Rezykowski also recognized the job Sherman and Miller did on the bump, "Dawson and Miller threw well, like they have all year."
Elk Lake scratched a run across in the top of the first without a hit. Braydon McMicken drew a leadoff walk and later scored on an error off the bat of Alden Felker.
Sherman struck out the side in order during the bottom of the first to keep it 1-0.
Sherman and Carbondale starter Krystal Calderon each struck out a pair of batters in the second.
Carbondale tied things up in the bottom of the third. After two quick outs, Sherman issued his only walk of the game, followed by a run scoring single to knot the game at one apiece.
Both teams worked out of some pressure situations to keep it a 1-1 ball game. The Chargers put a pair of runners on in the fourth, but failed to score.
The Warriors loaded the bases in the sixth, however a fielder's choice groundout ended the inning.
With the score tied 1-1 entering the ninth inning, Ayotte led it off with a walk. He would eventually score on an error by the catcher to put Elk Lake up 2-1.
Brayden Miller worked around a leadoff walk, striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth to secure the 2-1 victory for the Warriors.
Miller picked up the win, tossing the last one and two third innings. He struck out four and walked one.
Elk Lake tallied just two hits on the afternoon, McMicken and Sherman had the lone hits, while McMicken and Ayotte scored the runs.
For the talented Warriors lineup they have had trouble scoring runs of late as Coach Rezykowski added, "Our bats were quiet and have been for the last couple games. Hopefully we break out of it tomorrow against Dunmore to get us rolling into playoffs."
