PIAA GIRLS BASKETBALL: ELK LAKE COMES UP JUST SHORT AGAINST MARIAN CATHOLIC 47-45 (2025-03-11)

SusCo Sports Report
BERWICK - The Elk Lake Lady Warriors postseason came to an end in Berwick Tuesday night at the hands of District XI runner up Marian Catholic. It was a tight game throughout, but the Fillies held on for the 47-45 victory.

The Lady Warriors lit up the scoreboard in the middle quarters, building a seven point lead after three.

They would however struggle to find offense in the final quarter, as Marian Catholic outscored Elk Lake 13-4 in the games final eight minutes to get the two point victory.

The two teams combined for just 13 points in the first quarter, as the Lady Warriors found themselves trailing by one.

Leah Traver hit a pair of two pointers for Elk Lake, Madi Casselbury added a bucket notching the other two points.

Both teams seemed to find their stride in the second stanza, as the Lady Warriors outscored the Fillies 17-15 in the frame.

Traver led the charge canning a pair of three pointers, Casselbury and Kylie Shingler each drained a three of their own.

Casselbury and Marissa Horn each nailed a two point field goal, Horn added another point at the line. Heading into halftime Elk Lake held the slim 23-22 lead.

Traver came out of the locker room on fire, tallying 12 of the Lady Warriors 18 third quarter points.

She nailed one from behind the arc, three from inside the arc and was a perfect three for three at the stripe.

Katie McGlynn scored four points, Horn added a pair. After 24 minutes of play the Lady Warriors seemed in control 41-34.

However in the fourth quarter the Elk Lake offense stumbled as Shingler connected on one from behind the arc, for the only field goal of the final period.

Traver would add a point at the line, but it wasn't enough as Marian Catholic squeaked out the 47-45 win to move on to the elite eight Friday evening.

Traver led all scorers with 23 points in her final high school basketball game, hitting a trio of three pointers along the way.

Casselbury finished with seven points, Shingler hit a pair of threes for six points, Horn tallied five and McGlynn chipped in with four.

Marian Catholic connected on an impressive 10 three point field goals. Serfass hit three of them and led the Fillies with 15 points. Pugh drained four, totaling all 12 of her points.

Though it's never easy to lose at the end of a great season, there's only one team that gets to win their last game.

Elk Lake certainly had a great season, capturing the first league title in over 20 years and winning 24 basketball games.

Head Coach Meghan Casselbury was proud of everything the team accomplished this season, but was sad to see it come to an end.

"I'm really proud of the girls. They had a great undefeated regular league season. Their losses all came from teams who made it to states, which is an amazing accomplishment. They helped build a community and culture for girls basketball program. I couldn't be more proud, sad that it's over, but not any less proud," Coach Casselbury said.
