FIFTH GRADE BOYS: ELK LAKE DEFEATS MONTROSE 36-18 TO CLAIM TITLE (2025-03-02)

NEW MILFORD - Sunday was the fifth graders turn for their end of the year tournament. The two teams in the finals were the same as the sixth grade tournament, except for this time the roles were reversed and Elk Lake defeated Montrose 36-18 to take home the first place trophy.

The Little Warriors put on a scoring clinic in the first half, as Brant Shalata and Sawyer Pond each pumped in nine points to lead the 30 point scoring attack before intermission.

Pond buried a three pointer and added three more buckets, tallying nine points in the opening seven minutes to pace the Warriors offense.

Shalata hit a pair of two pointers, Tanner Rezykowski and Aiden Lunger each added a field goal of their own, rounding out the 17 point scoring blitz.

The Meteors got a bucket each from John Rebello and Tony Overfield, Andreas Carpenter added a free throw. At the first horn Elk Lake held a 17-5 lead.

Montrose struggled to find the bottom of the net again in the second, getting a field goal from Overfield and Carpenter for their only points of the stanza.

Meanwhile Elk Lake poured in 13 more points in the second quarter, Shalata lead the charge with five points.

Carter Kelly contributed with four points, Rezykowski and  Lunger each chipped in with a pair. Heading to the locker room their team had a commanding 30-9 advantage.

The Warriors offense would slow down in the third quarter as Montrose tried to claw back in it, outscoring Elk Lake 9-4 in the period.

Pond and Lunger each put up a pair of points, totaling all of the Warriors points.

Overfield and Carpenter each nailed a pair of two point field goals, Rebello added a point from the foul line. After there quarters of play it was 34-18 in favor of Elk Lake.

Both teams played solid defense in the final quarter with the two teams combining for just two points. Those points would come from the Warriors Keegan Burke.

When the final buzzer sounded the Warrior fifth graders bring the championship trophy back to Elk Lake with a 36-18 victory.

The Warriors had six players wind up in the scorers column, with Pond leading all scorers with 11 points.

Shalata tallied nine points, Lunger notched six, Rezykowski and Kelly finished with four points apiece and Burke pitched in with two.

Overfield led the Montrose scoring effort with eight points, Carpenter was right behind him with seven and Rebello chipped in with three points.
