DISTRICT WRESTLING: WOODRUFF STRIKES DISTRICT GOLD, TANZINI AND KRUPOVICH CAPTURE SILVER MEDALS FOR RAIDERS (2025-02-22)

WILKES-BARRE - The Blue Ridge Raiders had an impressive eight wrestlers make it to Saturday, with four in the semifinals and four in the wrestle backs. 

The Raiders would see three wrestlers win their semifinal bouts to automatically punch their ticket to the Northeast Regional tournament next weekend in Williamsport.

Aidan Tanzini(107) dominated his semifinal match against Matthew Shaffer of Lackawanna Trail, winning by technical fall 16-0 in 3:36.

Tanzini would settle for the silver medal, dropping a 13-2 major decision in the finals to Nathan Schuman of Honesdale.

Gabriel Maby(114) was pinned in the third period by the eventual 114 pound champion C.J. Caines during his semifinal match.

The Raider freshman bounced back by pounding Delos Stone of Montrose 18-0 in 3:55 to reach the consolation final and a shot at regionals.

Maby would fall just shy of his quest to get to Williamsport, settling for fourth place after being pinned in 4:47 by Tunkhannock's Taylor Daniels in the third place bout.

Brice Woodruff(121) had himself a great tournament, winning his opening match Friday by fall. He started his day Saturday with a technical fall over Riley Borruso 20-5 in 3:56.

Woodruff captured gold dominating Reese Dennis of Honesdale in the finals, recording another win by technical fall 23-6 in 3:11.

Giovanni Annesi was pinned during his opening match Saturday by Justin Scanlon of Honesdale in 1:53 to end his season.

Ethan Wright(139) was winning his consolation bout with Jeff Peck from Hanover Area in the second period, when he was caught and pinned, eliminating the sophomore from the tournament.

Nathan Oropallo(152) scored an 18-8 major decision in the consolation quarterfinal over Caiden Scouton of Dallas. He was pinned in his next match by Morgan Wilcox in 2:32.

Oropallo would end his season on a high note winning the fifth place bout 11-8 over Mid Valley's Wyatt Youngblood.

Zach Krupovich(160) had the most exciting semifinal match, using a takedown in the waining seconds of the match to defeat Scranton Prep's Jack Doughton 12-11.

Number one seeded Samuel Almedina of Mid Valley defeated Krupovich in the finals with a 15-0 technical fall in the first period.

Ryder Hobart(189) dropped his first match of the day by fall to Gregory Vassallo of Hanover Area in 3:17 for his second loss of the tournament.

Blue Ridge finished seventh in team points with 105, and send Tanzini, Woodruff and Krupovich to Williamsport next weekend for the Northeast Regional Tournament.

Head coach Charlie Church has got the best from his wrestlers all season, capturing their first league title since 2019. 

He was proud of their efforts today, "Today the boys wrestled like they practiced all season, with heart. The sport of wrestling gives you what you give it. I couldn't be prouder of how hard my team worked this season. With a young team I look forward to next year."
